Marta Kostyuk has already proven that Australia is her happiest hunting ground. The 15-year-old Ukrainian won the 2017 Australian Open junior title, then came back in 2018 to qualify for her first Grand Slam main draw where she made it all the way to third round before falling to her countrywoman Elina Svitolina.
Coming back for Fed Cup, Kostyuk kept winning – this time on the grass in Canberra – taking down Daria Gavrilova 7-6(3), 6-3 to rescue a point for Ukraine and level the tie.
“I’m playing good tennis,” Kostyuk told FedCup.com. “A fairytale is more like it happened once and you don’t know when it will happen again, so this is just another great tournament for me.”
Australia’s No.1 Ashleigh Barty earned the opening win, defeating Lyudmyla Kichenok in a tight 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 battle.
