Coming off of a quarterfinal finish at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, Wozniacki kept up her winning momentum against her young German opponent. The 22-year-old Witthoeft was billed a rising star after reaching the third round at all four Grand Slams and came into the matchup seeking her first win against a Top 10 opponent.
It was no easy feat against the World No.1, who got off to a fast start with an opening break to lead 2-0. Witthoeft did well to hang in the rallies against Wozniacki, breaking straight back, but Wozniacki’s level rose the longer they played. She reeled off the last four of five games, out hitting the German – especially off her favored backhand wing.
